Iberiandrinks has a new producer from Montsant, Celler Vendrell i Rived, in the province of Priorat, Catalonia.
Montsant area is an incomplete ring around the bottom of the hills that is Priorat, is in 2002 when the DO started, the youngest in Catalonia. The vineyards are planted between 200-400m altitudes, with the combination of different soils as calcareous, clay sand and slate. The production from the old indigenous grapes varieties, Garnacha and Cariñena, is small but offer concentration of fruit and tannins that give personality and with the result of intense colour and high alcohol, but with the adequate elaboration the wines are elegant and complex.
Josep M Vendrell makes two different wines, Serè 2014 and L’ Alleu 2013.
The winery is facing the Mediterranean Sea, there is a microclimate, sharing the Continental climate with a bit of Mediterranean. Also, has the wind coming from the interior Peninsula, called Serè, which gives the name of one of the wines. This wind is very important because prevents the development of fungal diseases in the vines. The label of Serè wine reflects the action of the wind and pay tribute to elderly people, the ones who planted the old Grenache and Carignan vines. L’ Alleu is the name of one of the estates, which surrounds the winery building.
