Cume do Avia, Ribeiro

Cume do Avia

Cume do Avia is the name of the top of the highest hill in the Ribeiro subregion of Avia, located in Ribadabia, Galicia. Diego, Álvaro and Fito are relatives but above all friends and vignerons. Their grandfather worked in the Ribeiro Cooperative so they belong to a family of viticulturists. In 2005 they decided to start from scratch the courageous project of making certified Organic wines, with some Biodynamic practices. They planted 13 autochthonous vine varieties on a total of 9 hectares. Located in Eira dos Mouros, a small town where their grandparents were born, and which became uninhabited in 1942. The soil is a mix of clay, schist and granite. The aspect is east facing, with optimum sun exposure and ventilation, high diurnal range in this Continental / Atlantic microclimate that recalls those in Burgundy. Here there is a difference of 120 metres between the lowest and highest vineyard. At the winery they work with a vertical press, centenary chestnut barrels and stainless steel deposits. Within the minimum intervention; spontaneous fermentations, indigenous yeast, no filtration, clarification with gravity and low in sulphites before bottling. They make red wines with low extraction and whites with skin contact. The white varieties are: Albariño, Loureira, Caíño Branco, Lado, Godello and Treixadura. The red ones: Brancellao, Merenzao, Ferrón, Sousón, Caíño Longo, Mencía and Carabuñeira. Organic certified by the Consello Regulador Agricultura Ecoloxica de Galicia.
